Over 860 Critical Infrastructure Organizations Impacted by Ransomware in 2022
Last year, ransomware gangs infiltrated the networks of at least 860 critical infrastructure organizations, according to the 2022, Internet Crime Report released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). It's worth noting this figure is likely an underestimate as the report only accounts for attacks reported to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). As shared by the FBI, of "the 16 critical infrastructure sectors, IC3 reporting indicated 14 sectors had at least 1 member that fell victim to a ransomware attack in 2022." Sectors most affected by ransomware attacks were healthcare with 210 hits, critical manufacturing with 157, government entities with 115, information technology with 107, and financial services with 88. The FBI also revealed Lockbit, ALPHV/BlackCat, and Hive as the three most prominent ransomware gangs responsible for attacks on critical infrastructure. It is estimated the total loss from ransomware attacks in 2022, was at least $34.3 million.
